A few questions we hear often.
01Do you accept unsolicited pitches from writers who have never been published?
Yes. A clear angle and confident prose matter far more than a publication history. First-time writers should mention that in the pitch — it helps us calibrate our notes and timeline.
02How long does it take to hear back on a submission?
We aim to respond within seven business days. During print-issue weeks and the August reading period, response times can extend to two to three weeks. If six weeks have passed without a reply, please follow up once.
03What kinds of essays are you actively looking for right now?
Our current editorial priorities are long-form criticism, profiles of under-recognized cultural figures, translation features, and essays that draw unexpected lines between contemporary culture and older archives. See our open calls on the Essays page.
04Do you pay for contributions?
Yes. We pay on acceptance, with rates that vary by length and reporting scope. Standard essays range from $0.40 to $0.75 per word; reported features are commissioned at higher rates. Full terms are shared with contributors before commissioning.
05Can I republish or translate an Inkling essay?
We welcome thoughtful syndication. Please write to our rights editor with the piece URL, the publication or platform you'd like to reprint in, and the territory and term you're requesting. Standard turnaround is two weeks.
06I have a complaint or correction about a published piece.
We take corrections seriously. Email the relevant editor with the article URL and a description of the issue. Verified corrections are noted at the top of the piece; significant ones may warrant a follow-up editor's note.
